Summoned to Moriah
Just as God summoned Abraham to sacrifice his son, Issac, at the top of Mount Moriah, we as a church are also being called to sacrifice.
What's the Plan?
Our Leadership Team and staff took a hard look at the needs of our church. Our biggest need is space. In order for us to accommodate the awesome growth that God has provided us with, we need to increase the facilities that we currently have.
The first area our plan addresses is our worship space. Our current sanctuary can seat five hundred and fifty people. As a rule of thumb, a worship space is seen as being full when it reaches 80% capacity. That means that we only have four hundred and forty seats that can be filled before people perceive our sanctuary to be too crowded. A new visitor, who is unable to find a seat, may feel like there's no room for them at our church. Our new worship center will seat 1500 people; this is close to three times our current seating capacity. Two thirds of the seating will be in the form of chairs. This gives us flexibility when it comes to the set up of the room.
As our church continues to grow, our children's department has also started to run out of space. A few years ago our grade school was meeting in one room on Sunday mornings. Now our grade school kids are split between two rooms because they could no longer fit in just one room. In fact the two rooms they are using are our two largest rooms, besides our current sanctuary and gym which are already being used for weekend services. The preschool department is also growing. We have recently added a new nursery for crawlers, but soon even these new spaces will be full and over flowing. In order to fix the space problem with our children, our current sanctuary will be converted into two children's worship spaces, one for kindergarten through second grade and the other for third through fifth grade. This will allow our children's pastors to continue to focus on a particular age group so that they can better reach that group. The nursery will move to a new location closer to the worship center. This provides easier drop off and pickup as well as close proximity for parents who may need to slip out of a service to be with their child.
The other problem facing our church is office space. Our staff is currently spread out throughout the church. We have staff people working in storage rooms, converted kitchens, and rooms that are essentially multipurpose rooms. We have four people working in our current children's office. Our office problem will be resolved by creating clusters of office spaces. A new office complex will house most of our pastoral and office staff. The arts department will have an office section down one of the new hallways. Our facility team and children's departments will have offices clustered in key locations in the building.
